Lakurawa militants attack Kebbe town in Sokoto State

Suspected Lakurawa militants launched a large-scale attack on Kebbe town in Sokoto State on Friday morning. Approximately 300 armed fighters on motorcycles entered the community around 10:00 a.m., engaging soldiers at a nearby military base in a prolonged gun battle.

Security expert Bashar Altine reported that four soldiers were feared killed during the confrontation. While the Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the incident, its spokesperson, Ahmed Rufai, stated that casualty figures, including the reported deaths of soldiers, have not yet been verified. The Nigerian Army's 8 Division has not officially confirmed the deaths.

Following the initial clash, the attackers moved into the Sabon Gari area, where they looted shops of mobile phones, cash, and bread. They also targeted a military vehicle equipped with a mounted rocket-propelled grenade, damaging its windscreen and tyres. The militants subsequently raided the Kebbe General Hospital, where they reportedly vandalized vehicles, including an ambulance and a police officer's vehicle, and robbed patients of their personal belongings. The group reportedly withdrew toward the west, heading in the direction of Ungushi.
