Lala Amarnath: India’s first Test centurion and first captain of independent India

Lala Amarnath, a pioneering figure in Indian cricket, is commemorated on his birth anniversary, September 11. Born in Kapurthala, Punjab, Amarnath holds the distinction of being India’s first Test centurion, achieving the feat during his debut match against England in 1933 at Mumbai’s Gymkhana Ground.

Following India's independence, Amarnath served as the nation's first captain of independent India. Under his leadership, India secured its first Test victory against Pakistan in 1952 at Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla ground. Throughout his career, he was noted for challenging the dominance of elite families in the sport, helping to popularize cricket among the general public.

Beyond his playing career, which included 24 Test matches, Amarnath contributed to the sport as a selector, team manager, coach, and broadcaster. He was recognized for his keen cricketing intuition, such as his decision to select Jasu Patel for a match against Australia in 1959-60 based on pitch conditions.
