LaLiga broadcasting costs rise in Spain amid high viewership

LaLiga broadcasting costs in Spain have risen by 61% over the last decade, diverging from the downward trend seen in France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. This increase is largely attributed to the distribution model where Telefónica holds national rights until 2032, requiring other operators to negotiate with the company. On average, following the complete league costs spectators approximately 1,475 euros per year.

Despite rising costs, LaLiga continues to drive significant viewership for broadcasters. DAZN reported a surge in audience share, reaching 2.3% on August 27th, driven by high-profile matches such as Barcelona’s 2-0 victory over Athletic Club. This match became the most-watched program in prime time across Spanish television. DAZN currently shares domestic broadcasting rights with Telefónica’s Movistar Plus+, with both platforms offering five matches per matchday.
