LaLiga President Javier Tebas disputes legal threats and defends broadcasting model
LaLiga President Javier Tebas has responded to a new legal procedure initiated by Spain’s Higher Sports Council (CSD) through the Administrative Tribunal of Sport (TAD), which could potentially lead to his disqualification. Tebas has denounced the move as a “double standard,” accusing sports authorities of remaining silent regarding corruption and match-fixing allegations made by Real Madrid and its television channel, while simultaneously targeting his leadership.
Tebas also addressed his controversial comparison of Real Madrid’s communication methods to Nazi propaganda techniques. He clarified that he was distinguishing between specific propaganda techniques and the ideology itself, stating that defending the competition requires responding to those who discredit it.
In a separate discussion regarding the economics of football, Tebas argued against the possibility of making elite football free to watch. He noted that advertising revenue alone is insufficient to cover player salaries and operational costs for major leagues like LaLiga, the Premier League, or the Bundesliga. He emphasized his goal of maintaining an economically healthy and competitive league, contrasting LaLiga’s revenue stability with the financial losses reported in the English Premier League.
