Lalitpur Buddhist Heritage Complex Restored with Indian Aid
Historic Buddhist sites in Lalitpur, Nepal — the Shree Gusthal Mahavihar and the Agam of Prathamshree Mahavihar in Guita Tole, Patan — have been fully restored and inaugurated in late July 2026. The restoration, costing about Rs 120 million (≈ NPR 120 million), was funded by the Government of India under its post‑earthquake reconstruction assistance programme. Implementation was carried out by Nepal's Central Level Project Implementation Unit (Buildings & Housing) with design and project‑management consultancy from the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
The inauguration ceremony was led by Nepali MP Jagdish Kharel, Lalitpur Metropolitan Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan, and Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava. Officials said the project forms part of a broader India‑supported effort that conserves 30 cultural heritage sites across eight districts and includes the reconstruction of 50,000 private houses, 85 schools and 133 health facilities throughout Nepal, underscoring the deep cultural ties between the two neighbours.
