Lalka adaptations: Two new versions of Prus's classic debut
Two major screen adaptations of Bolesław Prus’s classic novel ‘Lalka’ have recently debuted in Poland, sparking significant cultural discussion. The first is a six-episode Netflix series directed by Paweł Maślona, starring Tomasz Schuchardt as Stanisław Wokulski and Sandra Drzymalska as Izabela Łęcka. This production offers a modern perspective on the social struggles and secrets of the upper class.
The second adaptation is a feature film directed by Maciej Kawalski, which premiered in cinemas on September 30. Starring Marcin Dorociński as Wokulski and Kamila Urzędowska as Łęcka, this version aims for a more traditional, high-production approach closer to the original text. The film features notable appearances, including fashion designer Gosia Baczyńska in a supporting role and Marek Kondrat as Ignacy Rzecki.
Behind the scenes, the productions utilized various specialists, such as professional calligrapher Aleksandra Ćwikowska to handle the intricate handwriting seen in key scenes of the Netflix series. The simultaneous release of these two distinct interpretations of the same literary characters has highlighted the enduring relevance of Prus’s work in contemporary media formats.
