Netflix releases reimagined ‘Lalka’ series inspired by Bolesław Prus

Netflix has released a new six-episode series inspired by Bolesław Prus’s classic novel ‘Lalka’. Directed by Paweł Maślona, the production is described as a multi-genre reinterpretation rather than a faithful adaptation, blending period drama with elements of crime, irony, and grotesque realism.

The series stars Tomasz Schuchardt as Stanisław Wokulski and Sandra Drzymalska as Izabela Łęcka. Unlike traditional versions, this adaptation introduces significant changes, such as Izabela pursuing a career in journalism and the inclusion of dark investigative subplots. The production has garnered international attention, with foreign media comparing its style to ‘Bridgerton’.

In addition to the Netflix series, a cinematic adaptation directed by Maciej Kawalski is scheduled for release on September 30, featuring Marcin Dorociński in the lead role. Locally, the series' release has inspired creative tributes, including special themed packaging from the Warsaw confectionery Lukullus.
