Netflix releases new adaptation of Bolesław Prus’s ‘Lalka’

Netflix has released a new six-episode series adaptation of Bolesław Prus’s classic novel ‘Lalka’ (The Doll). Directed by Paweł Maślona, the production is a multi-genre reinterpretation that departs significantly from the original text by incorporating elements of crime, irony, and grotesque realism. The series features Sandra Drzymalska as Izabela Łęcka and Tomasz Schuchardt as Stanisław Wokulski.

The adaptation has sparked intense debate among viewers and critics. While some praise its modern approach and high production values, others criticize its departure from the source material, noting the inclusion of explicit scenes, contemporary themes, and altered character motivations. For instance, Izabela is portrayed as a more independent figure, and the plot includes new subplots such as a criminal investigation and the presence of historical figure Eliza Orzeszkowa.

International attention has also been drawn to the series, with ‘The New York Times’ describing it as a grand costume spectacle. The production is part of a broader wave of high-budget Polish content on the platform. Additionally, a cinematic adaptation of ‘Lalka’ directed by Maciej Kawalski is scheduled for release in theaters on September 30, 2026.
