Lam Pao Dam fishers warn of blackchin tilapia infestation
Fishermen around the Lam Pao Dam in Kalasin province are warning of an increasing infestation of blackchin tilapia. Local fishers report that the invasive species has adapted well to freshwater environments, making them difficult to distinguish from tilapia. Since August 31, more than 200 blackchin tilapia have been caught, many of which were found to be full of eggs.
The infestation is most concentrated in the areas connecting Sahatsakhan, Nong Kung Si, and Sam Chai districts. Local fishers are currently following the ‘See, Report, Catch, Finish’ protocol to manage the spread.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Watcharapol Khaokham, has visited the site to monitor the situation. While government agencies have mobilized rapid response units and volunteer fishers, locals have expressed concerns regarding the clarity and effectiveness of ongoing state measures to contain the spread.
