Lam Research breaks ground on new AI chip R&D lab in Oregon

Lam Research has broken ground on a new 120,000-square-foot research and development facility in Tualatin, Oregon. The project is part of a broader five-year global investment plan exceeding $3 billion aimed at expanding the company’s laboratory network to support the development of advanced AI chips.

Located in the Silicon Forest, the new facility will increase cleanroom lab space at the existing Tualatin R&D center by more than 50%. The lab will focus on advanced logic, memory, and packaging tools, with a specific emphasis on high-bandwidth memory required for high-performance computing and AI workloads. The expansion is intended to compress semiconductor process development cycles by up to 2.5 times through an integrated 24/7 program.

The groundbreaking ceremony included several government officials and leaders from major semiconductor companies, including Intel Corporation and Micron Technology.
