Lamb feedlots offer seasonal reliability for producers

Dr. Paul Cusack, principal of Australian Livestock Production Services and adjunct professor at Charles Sturt University, suggests that on-farm lamb feedlots can provide a reliable way to finish lambs regardless of seasonal conditions.

While noting that grass-fed lamb remains a high-quality product, Cusack explains that lotfeeding is primarily driven by the need for reliability and consistency. It allows producers to meet specific requirements at set times, particularly during hot summer months when pastures may struggle to support livestock.

Unlike beef feedlots, lamb feedlots do not require massive capital investment and can be designed with relatively simple infrastructure, such as ringlock fencing. This flexibility allows producers to move in and out of lotfeeding operations more easily.
