Lamborghini CEO dismisses Chinese electric supercars as a competitive threat

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann stated that the rise of Chinese electric supercars does not currently pose a competitive threat to the Italian manufacturer. While acknowledging the impressive technical specifications of Chinese models—such as the Denza Z, which boasts over 1,500 horsepower, and BYD’s Yangwang U9—Winkelmann argues that these vehicles lack the emotional resonance, auditory character, and driving sensations provided by internal combustion and hybrid engines.

As a result of low consumer demand for fully electric models, Lamborghini has shifted its strategy to focus on plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology and the preservation of its traditional V12 engines. The company has delayed the launch of its first fully electric vehicle, potentially until after 2030, to ensure that any future EV is a ‘masterpiece’ in terms of performance.

Despite the current lack of concern, Winkelmann noted that the landscape could change in the future, stating, ‘Never say never.’
