Lameck Ndomba consecrated as 11th Bishop of Zanzibar
The Anglican Church of Tanzania has consecrated the Rt Rev Lameck Ndomba as the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Zanzibar. The ceremony, held on September 20, 2026, at the Christ Church Cathedral in Mkunazini, marks the end of a multi-year vacancy and period of internal conflict within the diocese.
The vacancy followed the suspension and retirement of the previous bishop, Michael Hafidh, amid allegations of misconduct, theft, and moral turpitude. The dispute involved significant tension between the bishop and the cathedral chapter, leading to the dissolution of the chapter and the placement of the diocese under provincial oversight in 2022.
Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi attended the installation, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the government and religious institutions. He described faith leaders as indispensable partners in national development, noting their contributions to healthcare, education, and social stability. Dr. Mwinyi also highlighted the role of religious institutions in promoting peace, tolerance, and the use of the Kiswahili language.
