LaMelo Ball faces travel controversy during Timberwolves debut

Minnesota Timberwolves guard LaMelo Ball sparked significant controversy during his season debut against the Miami Heat after a successful stepback three-pointer was not whistled for a travel. While the basket counted, replays showed Ball taking approximately four steps after gathering the ball, exceeding the two permitted steps under NBA rules.

The NBA Referees union addressed the play on social media, stating, “For everyone asking, ‘how is this legal?’ It’s not!” The union clarified that Ball gathered the ball with his right foot on the floor and subsequently took four steps.

During a post-game appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter, Ball defended the move by claiming he was “letting the ball guide” him, suggesting that as long as he does not touch the ball, the steps are permissible. The play also drew criticism from ESPN broadcasters Mike Breen and Richard Jefferson, as well as Ball’s brother, Lonzo Ball, who mocked the play on social media.
