Lamia celebrates Saint Luke feast and liberation anniversary
The city of Lamia celebrated the feast day of its patron saint, Saint Luke the Evangelist, alongside the 82nd anniversary of the city's liberation from German occupation forces. The religious commemorations included a Grand Panegyric Vespers and an Orthros service held at the Holy Temple of Saint Luke.
The ceremonies were attended by several high-ranking clergy, including Metropolitan Symeon of Phthiotis, Metropolitan Serapion of Paramythia, Metropolitan Athenagoras of Ilion, Metropolitan Chariton of Elassona, and Metropolitan Amfilochios of Thira. Musical accompaniment was provided by choirs from the ‘Germanos the Melodist’ Conservatory of the Holy Metropolis of Phthiotis.
The celebrations concluded with a procession featuring icons of Saint Luke and the Virgin Hodegetria, as well as the saint's relics. The historical significance of the event marks the period in October 1944 when German troops departed the city, avoiding the destruction of vital infrastructure such as the electricity plant and ammunition depots.
