Lamine Yamal’s World Cup goal celebration sparks racist backlash
Spain’s 18‑year‑old forward Lamine Yamal scored the opening goal in the Group H match against Saudi Arabia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Atlanta. Minutes after the strike he performed a sujud, a Muslim act of gratitude, on the pitch. The celebration quickly went viral, receiving praise from Muslim fans worldwide and highlighting Yamal’s openly expressed Islamic identity.
The same footage triggered a wave of Islam‑phobic and racist commentary on social media. Users posted hateful messages questioning his Spanish nationality, sharing AI‑generated fake images and slogans such as “A Muslim cannot be Spanish” and “A black person will always be a black person.” The Spanish Racism and Xenophobia Observatory listed Yamal among the athletes most exposed to hate speech online. The incident has reignited debate in Spain over religious expression in sports and broader concerns about online hate toward athletes of multicultural backgrounds.
Yamal, born in Spain to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother, is already regarded as one of the game’s brightest young talents.
