Lamine Yamar Targets Racist Abuse After Spain's World Cup Victory
Teenager Lamine Yamar, 19, posted an Instagram photo of the FIFA World Cup trophy with a caption reading “6 am pic I had lying around” and recalled a conversation with Lionel Messi after Spain’s triumph. Shortly after the celebration, he was subjected to racist chants during the homecoming events in Madrid, with spectators shouting “Fuera, moro” and questioning his Spanish identity. The abuse referenced his Moroccan heritage despite his birth in Spain. Spain’s Observatory on Racism and Xenophobia reported 40,861 hate‑speech items in June, 88 % of which targeted people of North African origin, highlighting a broader surge in online and street‑level racism during the tournament.
The incidents underscore the contrast between the national joy over the World Cup win and the persistent discrimination faced by the player.
