Lampedusa migrant arrivals drop significantly in 2024

Lampedusa Mayor Filippo Mannino reported a significant decrease in migrant arrivals on the island. According to Mannino, arrivals dropped from over 100,000 in 2023 to fewer than 10,000 as of August 31 this year.

Mannino noted that the management of the local hotspot has improved, moving away from an emergency-based approach toward more professional management, aided by the presence of the Red Cross. This shift has facilitated faster medical transfers and reduced the congestion seen in previous years.

While migrant arrivals have declined, the island experienced a surge in tourism, with air travel increasing by 33%. In August alone, 930,000 people arrived by air. This high volume of tourists has strained local infrastructure, including water, sewage, and waste management services. To address these challenges, the mayor suggested that the government support the island as a frontier territory and proposed increasing the landing tax for tourists to fund better service quality.
