Dangote refinery project in Lamu faces legal and political challenges

The Sh2 trillion Dangote East Africa Refinery project in Lamu is facing significant legal and political challenges. A group of 133 residents, led by Salim Tima Swale, has filed a case at the Environment and Land Court in Malindi. The petitioners argue that the 12,000-acre site is ancestral land and that the community was not consulted regarding its use for the refinery.

In response to the filing, the Malindi court ordered the maintenance of the status quo on the contested property and directed the respondents, including government agencies and the Office of the President, to respond within seven days. Justice David Mburu has certified the petition as urgent.

Concurrently, Senator Edwin Sifuna has raised concerns regarding transparency and parliamentary oversight. Sifuna alleged that a formal request for information concerning the refinery's financing, implementation model, and public participation details was blocked from reaching the Senate floor. He accused government allies in Parliament of frustrating attempts to scrutinize major state-backed projects.
