Lance Stroll criticizes Formula 1 power unit complexity

Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll has criticized the current technical direction of Formula 1, specifically regarding the complexity of the new power unit regulations. Stroll expressed dissatisfaction with the increased reliance on electrical power, which now accounts for approximately half of the available power compared to 20% in previous iterations.

The driver noted that the heavy involvement of onboard computer systems in managing energy deployment creates a disconnect between driver demand and actual power delivery. Stroll described the current racing dynamic as a “yo-yo” style of competition, where a driver might successfully complete an overtake only to be forced to spend the following laps recharging the battery, thereby losing their competitive advantage.

Stroll advocated for a more intuitive system where power delivery is directly proportional to driver input. He suggested that the current complexity diminishes the enjoyment of driving and the quality of on-track battles. Meanwhile, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has previously suggested the possibility of returning to V8 engines in future regulation cycles, potentially around 2030 or 2031.
