Lancet Oncology Commission targets equitable access to precision oncology

The Lancet Oncology Commission on Cancer Genomics and Precision Oncology has released a comprehensive report aimed at accelerating the global development and equitable implementation of cancer genomics in healthcare systems. Presented at the World Cancer Congress in Hong Kong, the initiative seeks to address the gap between scientific advancements in personalized medicine and the actual accessibility of these treatments for patients worldwide.

The commission, which includes experts in oncology, genomics, public health, and ethics, provides a global roadmap to make precision oncology more sustainable and evidence-based. A key focus is ensuring that molecular testing and personalized therapies are not limited by socioeconomic or systemic barriers.

Researchers from the University of Verona, including Professor Rita Lawlor, contributed to the commission. The report highlights that while genomic progress offers extraordinary opportunities for tumor treatment, significant challenges remain in translating these scientific breakthroughs into concrete clinical benefits across diverse healthcare environments.
