Land disputes arise in Meghna River as Umngot River draws attention
In Kamalnagar, Lakshmipur, a new char (river island) has emerged in the Meghna River within the South Jagabandhu area. While the fertile land offers hope to farmers who previously lost homes and fields to river erosion, local landowners fear the new land will be seized by influential groups. Affected residents have formed the ‘Char Jagabandhu, Falcon, and Patwarir Hat Landowner Unity Council’ to protect their rights and ensure peaceful cultivation.
In Meghalaya, India, the Umngot River near Dawki is recognized for its extreme water clarity, allowing observers to see the riverbed and aquatic life from boats. The river, located near the India-Bangladesh border, is a significant tourist attraction, though its transparency can decrease during the monsoon season due to heavy rainfall.
