Land disputes reported in Juliaca and Santiago del Estero
In Juliaca, residents of the Villa El Carmen urbanization have reported the alleged usurpation of approximately 200 land lots. The dispute involves six hectares of land that were reportedly subdivided and sold to private owners in 2009 and 2012. However, representatives from the Canchi Grande community allegedly managed a new subdivision of the same area in 2022, claiming it as communal property. Affected owners, who claim to hold legal deeds, expressed concerns regarding property rights and the ability to access or build on their lots.
In Santiago del Estero, Argentina, a police operation attempted to evict a family from the ancestral territory of the Lule Vilela La Armonía indigenous community. The Movimiento Campesino de Santiago del Estero (MOCASE) reported that the eviction was prompted by an individual claiming ownership of the communal land for sale. The eviction order was temporarily suspended following local resistance.
