Land Rover delays next-generation Defender and electric models until 2030

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has delayed the launch of the next-generation Land Rover Defender, including its anticipated fully electric version, until at least 2030. The postponement is attributed to technical delays, budget reductions, and the need for cost-cutting measures amidst heavy investment in new models.

While the Defender replacement is pushed back, JLR is prioritizing other electric vehicle launches. The company plans to release several battery-electric models before 2030, including the Range Rover Sport electric and the Range Rover GT. These models will utilize the EMA platform, though JLR has revised its strategy to include hybrid systems within this new architecture.

To adapt to market conditions and its heavy dependence on North America, JLR is also leveraging a partnership with Stellantis. However, this strategic shift may impact production volumes and profitability for vehicles assembled in European plants.
