Land Rover unveils road-legal Defender Dakar SUV

Land Rover has unveiled the Defender Dakar, a limited-production, road-legal SUV inspired by its successful D7X-R racing vehicle from the 2026 Dakar Rally. The vehicle was revealed as a design preview during Monterey Car Week.

Built on the Defender Octa platform, the Dakar features a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine producing between 626 and 635 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. Unlike the competition model, which was restricted by rally regulations, the road version utilizes the engine's full power.

Key technical features include Bilstein advanced dampers, a specialized coilover suspension, and 35-inch all-terrain tires mounted on 20-inch forged wheels. The vehicle introduces a unique ‘Flight Mode’ designed to optimize suspension control during jumps and landings, alongside dedicated ‘Dunes’ and ‘Gravel’ driving modes.

The interior is optimized for utility and performance with a 2+2 seating layout, racing bucket seats, and optional four-point harnesses. Exterior enhancements include carbon fiber components, a roof-mounted light pod, and riveted wheel arches. Reservations for the Defender Dakar are expected to open in early 2027, with further technical details slated for release at the 2027 Dakar Rally.
