Landfill fires reported in Tangerang and Malang

Multiple landfill fires have been reported in Indonesia, causing smoke issues and local distress. In Tangerang, the Rawa Kucing landfill caught fire on October 24, 2026. This marks the second fire at the site in October. Authorities suspect extreme heat and methane gas buildup as potential causes. Firefighters managed to control the blaze quickly, though residents expressed trauma due to a massive fire at the same location in 2023 that lasted two weeks.

In Malang, a fire at the Supit Urang landfill, covering over 8 hectares, has been burning since October 21, 2026. The resulting smoke has affected several areas, including Dinoyo, Tlogomas, and Dau. Deputy Mayor Ali Muthohirin has apologized to affected residents and announced that local health centers (Puskesmas) will provide free medical services to those impacted by the smoke. Authorities are also distributing masks and advising the public to wear them while outdoors.
