Lando Norris apologizes to Franco Colapinto after Baku collision controversy

Formula 1 drivers Lando Norris and Franco Colapinto have resolved a conflict stemming from a collision during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Following the incident, where Colapinto’s Alpine collided with Pierre Gasly and Norris’s McLaren, Norris had publicly criticized Colapinto, suggesting he did not deserve an F1 seat and should face a race suspension.

Speaking in Malaysia, Norris apologized to Colapinto, admitting his comments were made in the heat of the moment and were inappropriate. He noted that while he had already apologized to Colapinto privately, his public statement was intended to address the intense online backlash and social media hostility directed at him by some fans.

Colapinto expressed surprise at the initial criticism but accepted the apology, noting that both drivers had acknowledged their respective roles in the incident. He also commented on the prevalence of online hate directed at drivers, particularly noting the intense pressure faced by Argentine athletes. Other drivers, including Max Verstappen and George Russell, offered support to Colapinto, with Verstappen emphasizing the need for experienced drivers to be understanding of younger competitors.

Alpine Team Principal Flavio Briatore addressed the crash, stating that while the team was disappointed by the loss of points in Baku, the matter has been handled internally and the team is moving forward.
