McLaren drivers battle intensely at Italian Grand Prix

McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri engaged in an intense intra-team battle during the closing laps of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The duel for fourth place saw significant wheel-to-wheel action, including a moment where Norris was forced onto the grass at high speed while attempting an overtake.

While Norris initially expressed frustration over the radio, describing the maneuver as “dangerous,” he later moderated his stance, acknowledging that the high-speed perception in the cockpit can be distorting and ultimately stating the battle was “okay.” Piastri, who finished fifth, described the encounter as a “good battle” and noted the difficulty of racing against a teammate who knows your every strength and weakness.

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella defended the decision to let the drivers race without team orders, noting that both were on identical tires and equipment. However, Stella indicated that the team will review the incident internally to evaluate the risks of such a philosophy. Despite the tension, both drivers viewed the performance as a positive step forward for the team in a competitive field.
