Lando Norris faces risk of finishing outside F1 top five

McLaren driver Lando Norris faces the possibility of finishing his first championship season outside the top five in the Formula 1 standings. Currently sitting in sixth place for the 2026 season, Norris has 201 points, trailing leader Kimi Antonelli by 139 points with six stages remaining.

Norris has attributed the difficulty in defending his title to the performance and handling of the MCL40. He noted that while the car showed flashes of speed, it lacked the consistency required for a championship campaign, stating it was “almost impossible” to perform a qualifying lap from start to finish.

If Norris fails to break into the top five, he would be the first defending champion to do so since Damon Hill in 1997. Currently, Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, George Russell, and Lewis Hamilton all hold higher positions in the championship standings.
