Lando Norris loses Spanish GP lead due to Virtual Safety Car timing

Lando Norris secured pole position at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, edging out Andrea Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds. Despite a near-perfect qualifying performance, Norris saw his race lead vanish due to a poorly timed Virtual Safety Car (VSC).

The VSC was deployed following a mechanical failure in Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin. Because Norris had just passed the pit entry seconds before the neutralization, he was unable to take advantage of the reduced pit stop times that allowed rivals like Antonelli and Max Verstappen to gain a strategic advantage. The timing forced Norris to pit under green flag conditions, ultimately resulting in a third-place finish.

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella praised Norris’s qualifying lap as a ‘masterpiece’ but noted the team would not blame race direction for the outcome. Stella emphasized that the race director must follow established regulations regarding safety car deployment, even when the timing significantly impacts the race results.
