China landslide in Chongqing kills 8, leaves 34 missing
A heavy‑rain‑triggered landslide struck Pengshui County in the southwest of Chongqing on 17 July 2026. The slide buried more than ten residential buildings, killing at least eight people and leaving 34 others missing. Over 1,100 residents were evacuated from the affected area.
Rescue operations involved more than 800 rescuers, including over 100 engineers from the Anneng Construction Group and more than 400 firefighters from Chongqing. Ten people have been rescued and taken to hospital, while authorities continue to search for the missing under massive rocks and debris.
China’s Ministry of Emergency Management activated a Level‑II national emergency response for geological disasters. President Xi Jinping ordered a scientific rescue effort, an investigation into the cause, and measures to prevent secondary landslides. The central government allocated between 30 million and 50 million yuan for relief and infrastructure restoration. The disaster follows a similar landslide in Gansu province two weeks earlier that caused 21 deaths.
