Landslides cause road closures in Italy and Switzerland

Landslides have caused significant transportation disruptions in both Italy and Switzerland. In Italy, a new landslide occurred on Via Diana, the provincial road connecting Genzano di Roma with Lake Nemi. This route has been partially closed to vehicular traffic for over three years due to ongoing rockfalls and falling trees. Local authorities noted that the incident will lead to further traffic limitations on the SP 79/b, impacting tourism and local economic activities near the Museum of Roman Ships.

In Switzerland, the Lavinone landslide has forced the preventive closure of the cantonal road between Corticiasca and Scareglia, affecting the Capriasca and Val Colla regions. Technical assessments indicate the landslide movement can be slowed but not stopped, necessitating a structural solution that may take nearly two years to complete. To mitigate the impact on residents, the Canton and the City of Lugano have committed to improving the municipal road between Signôra and Maglio di Colla as an essential alternative route.
