Landspout tornado observed in Paraná, Brazil
A rare meteorological phenomenon known as a landspout tornado was observed on Thursday afternoon near the border of Ponta Grossa and Carambeí, in the Campos Gerais region of Paraná, Brazil. The event featured a funnel-shaped column of air that briefly reached near the ground, capturing the attention of local residents and circulating widely on social media.
Simepar identified the occurrence as a landspout, which differs from traditional tornadoes associated with supercell storms. Unlike supercell-driven tornadoes, landspouts form from smaller air vortices near the surface that organize and gain strength without a mesocyclone. This type of tornado is typically characterized by lower intensity, often rated F0 or F1, and shorter durations. No injuries or significant property damage were reported following the event.
