Lane Kiffin proposes Big Ten-SEC challenge to settle conference debate

Kiffin suggested dedicating one week early in the regular season to inter-conference matchups, arguing that common opponents would provide more trustworthy data for comparing teams, similar to the NFL structure.

The proposal comes as the SEC faces a three-year drought of national championships, with the Big Ten winning the last three titles. While the SEC has historically dominated, the conference is currently navigating a more demanding schedule following the implementation of a nine-game league slate. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey noted that this format creates the most demanding schedules in college football, a move intended to reinforce the conference's status as the best in the nation despite the increased difficulty in maintaining postseason resumes.
