Langenselbold launches pilot project against invasive Big Gland Ants

The city of Langenselbold is intensifying efforts to combat the invasive Big Gland Ant (Tapinoma magnum), a species originating from the Mediterranean region that has been spreading across Germany. These ants can form massive supercolonies that displace native species and cause damage to paved surfaces, pathways, green spaces, and technical installations, including electrical systems.

To curb the spread, the city administration is conducting a pilot project to test various eradication methods. While previous efforts relied on hot water or steam treatments, the new project aims to test less established methods, such as the use of emulsions or gels, applied at shorter intervals. Climate protection manager Annika Bein stated that the goal is to find an optimal solution, noting that while many municipalities are researching the issue, a satisfactory solution has not yet been found.
