Langford begins construction on modular mass timber arts and child care centre

Construction is underway for a new $10.6 million child care and community arts centre in Langford, British Columbia. The facility, located on Glen Lake Road, is utilizing a unique construction method described by project architect Tom Moore as the first of its kind in North America, combining volumetric mass timber with prefabricated modular units.

The modular approach involves factory-built units, complete with windows, doors, and integrated systems like plumbing and HVAC, which are transported to the site and stacked. This method is intended to accelerate the timeline for a projected spring 2027 opening while reducing waste and project costs.

Once completed, the two-storey building will provide 49 child care spaces on the ground floor. The second floor will house community arts facilities, including a pottery studio, dance studio, music room, and art room. The project is funded through various sources, including a $6.27 million grant from the ChildCareBC New Spaces fund and $1.85 million from the Province’s Growing Communities Fund.
