Langford uses goatscaping to mitigate wildfire risk
The city of Langford hosted its first ‘Goats in the City’ event on August 23 to demonstrate how ‘goatscaping’ can assist in wildfire mitigation. By utilizing herds to consume invasive and flammable plant species, such as Himalayan blackberry, the initiative aims to reduce wildfire risks.
Courtney Tremblay, Langford’s FireSmart coordinator, noted that goats target vegetation that is otherwise difficult to manage. During the event, a herd of 13 goats from Vancouver Island Goatscaping worked near Starlight Stadium to clear encroaching vegetation.
