Langley City transitions to Community Safety officer model
Langley City is transitioning its bylaw enforcement model to a Community Safety officer system, a change expected to be fully implemented by 2027. This evolution aims to move beyond traditional enforcement toward a prevention-focused approach that emphasizes early engagement, education, de-escalation, and connecting residents to community services.
In addition to the role changes, the City is implementing a ‘one-stop approach’ for municipal services. This initiative is designed to streamline public interaction by providing a single contact point for neighborhood concerns, allowing the City to coordinate internally across various departments and community partners.
The shift follows recommendations from the Citizens’ Assembly on Community Safety and Well-being. Mayor Nathan Pachal stated that the changes aim to provide residents with clearer ways to report concerns and greater confidence that complex safety issues are being addressed. While the new roles include higher pay rates, Deputy CAO Graham Flack noted that the City is covering these costs within its existing budget.
