Langley Township Mayor sued for defamation by Martini family
Four members of the Martini family have filed a defamation lawsuit in the B.C. Supreme Court against Township of Langley Mayor Eric Woodward. The plaintiffs include Gemma Martini, CEO of Martini Film Studios; her brother Thomas Martini, CEO of Lorval Developments; and their parents, Maria and Renato Martini, owners of Coast Cranberries Ltd.
The lawsuit stems from comments Woodward made during a July 16 radio interview on CKNW’s Mike Smyth show. The plaintiffs allege that Woodward’s remarks regarding an ongoing dispute over community amenity contributions between the Township and the family were “false and defamatory.”
The 10-page claim accuses Woodward of “express malice,” asserting he made the statements knowing they were false or with reckless indifference to the truth. The Martini family is seeking unspecified damages, a formal declaration of defamation, and a permanent injunction to prevent the Mayor from further disseminating the content.
