Langley Township resident calls for revision of election sign bylaw
A resident of Langley Township has called on the local council and Mayor Woodward to revisit the current Election and Political Signs Bylaw. The existing policy restricts election signage to private property only, a measure intended to reduce garbage and cleanup costs.
Critics of the bylaw argue that the restriction negatively impacts the democratic process by reducing voter awareness and turnout. The resident noted that during the last municipal election, only 26 per cent of eligible voters participated. Furthermore, the current policy is said to favor well-known candidates who rely on name recognition, while depriving newer candidates of a low-cost promotional tool.
There are also concerns regarding equity, as the private-property-only model may disadvantage renters and residents of strata complexes, such as condos and townhomes, who often face restrictions on displaying signage on balconies or windows.
