Lanka Metro Transit receives Rs. 1.06 billion for Colombo bus expansion

The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved an equity investment of approximately Rs. 1.0675 billion for Lanka Metro Transit (Private) Limited to expand its urban transport network in Colombo. The funding aims to support the deployment of 112 additional low-floor buses starting in September, following a successful pilot program using 10 buses under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative.

The investment is structured to support both infrastructure and operations. Rs. 800 million is allocated for 2026 to fund infrastructure development, including a central workshop at Ekala and modern bus depots in Thalangama, Kadawatha, Ratmalana, and Homagama. An additional Rs. 267.5 million will be provided in 2027 to support ongoing operations. The project also includes upgrades to internal roads and bus parking facilities.
