Lanna traditions observed during 12 Peng merit-making ceremonies

Lanna Buddhist communities in Northern Thailand observed the traditional '12 Peng' or 'Tan Kuay Salak' merit-making ceremonies on September 26, 2026. This significant cultural event involves offering food and supplies to monks to dedicate merit to deceased ancestors and wandering spirits.

At Wat Chiang Man in Chiang Mai, local officials and religious leaders presided over a large-scale ceremony. Participants gathered to practice the ancient tradition of preparing 'Kuay Salak' baskets to honor the departed.

In Phayao, at Wat Chiang Thong, villagers also held ceremonies based on the belief that the gates of hell open during this period, allowing spirits to receive offerings. Following the rituals, local residents reported unusual activity, including dogs barking continuously and CCTV footage showing unidentified moving lights near the temple entrance, which officials noted could be environmental reflections or insects.
