Lanzarote and La Graciosa hit by major power outage
A major power outage affected approximately 73,600 users across Lanzarote and La Graciosa during the early hours of a Saturday. The blackout began around 5:44 AM, initially impacting 51,700 customers following a failure in the 66 kV network at the Mácher substation in Tías.
A second incident at the San Bartolomé and Punta Grande substations expanded the scope of the outage. While electricity was progressively restored throughout the morning, Playa Blanca remained unaffected due to its electrical connection to Fuerteventura.
The outage disrupted essential services, including desalination plants, which caused issues for the water supply. In response, the Government of the Canary Islands activated the Territorial Emergency Plan for Civil Protection (PLATECA), and the Cabildo de Lanzarote triggered its Insular Emergency Plan (PEIN). The exact cause of the electrical failure is currently under investigation.
