Lanzarote hospital implements geothermal energy for thermal needs

The Hospital Universitario Doctor José Molina Orosa in Lanzarote has implemented a low-enthalpy geothermal plant to meet part of its thermal energy needs. This initiative is part of the Canary Health Service (SCS) strategy, ‘Salud Zer0 Emisiones Netas 2030’, which aims to reduce emissions within the healthcare sector.

The project, which began as a pilot in 2023, involved a total investment exceeding 1.2 million euros. Funding was provided by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Canary Health Service, supported by Next Generation funds through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. This move highlights the growing importance of energy efficiency in hospitals, which require continuous climate control, heating, and cooling to maintain stable conditions for patients and staff.
