Lao Cai aims to relocate 80% of households from high-risk disaster areas
The Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee has issued a plan to enhance environmental management and climate change adaptation. A primary objective of the initiative is to relocate 80% of households currently residing in areas at high risk of natural disasters.
The plan focuses on improving state management of the environment, controlling pollution, and protecting natural resources. Key measures include investing in waste and wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure, improving environmental monitoring, and controlling major emission sources. The province aims to reduce the direct landfill rate to below 30% by reviewing existing sites and implementing a roadmap to close 43 landfills.
Additionally, the province will strengthen controls over industrial waste and mineral mining activities. Efforts will also be directed toward nature conservation, forest ecosystem restoration, and the development of sustainable livelihoods linked to forest protection.
