Lao Cai intensifies measures to combat African swine fever

Lao Cai province is intensifying measures to control African swine fever following an outbreak that has affected 36 communes. From the beginning of the year through October 12, 2026, the disease has impacted 418 households across 128 villages.

According to the Lao Cai Department of Agriculture and Environment, a total of 2,844 pigs, weighing over 127,377 kg, have been culled to prevent further spread. While many communes have reported no new cases for over 21 days, authorities warn that the risk of transmission remains high due to the virus's ability to persist in the environment and through contaminated tools, feed, or transport vehicles.

Local agricultural departments are working with grassroots authorities to enhance monitoring, detection, and handling of outbreaks. Specialized teams have been established to inspect and guide local prevention efforts in accordance with veterinary laws.
