Laojun Mountain hires vlogger for cloudscape observer role

Li Sichen, a 23-year-old vlogger, recently completed a month-long assignment as a “cloudscape observer” at Laojun Mountain in China’s Henan province. The position, which paid 60,000 yuan (approximately 7,700 euros), attracted over 3,500 applicants.

While the role was marketed as a dream job involving living atop a sacred Taoist mountain to film clouds, Li described the reality as a demanding schedule. His daily routine required waking up at 5:00 a.m. to capture sunrise and clouds, filming throughout the day, and spending evenings editing footage and color grading videos.

Li noted challenges such as unpredictable weather, which could prevent the capture of necessary cloud footage, and the pressure to maintain high social media engagement. Despite the intense workload, the experience allowed him to significantly improve his drone and video editing skills.
