Laos faces African swine fever outbreak affecting 11,000 pigs
A new wave of African swine fever (ASF) is spreading across several provinces in Laos, resulting in the death or culling of more than 11,000 pigs since new outbreaks emerged in June 2026.
Significant outbreaks have been reported in Xayabouly, Phongsaly, Houaphanh, Xaysomboun, Luang Prabang, and Vientiane. In the northwest province of Xayabouly alone, the virus has affected six districts, causing losses estimated at approximately 14.9 billion kips (about 570,000 euros). In Luang Prabang, nearly 1,000 pigs have died across four districts.
Authorities are implementing strict controls to contain the epidemic, including limiting the movement and sale of pigs and establishing 19 checkpoints in Xayabouly. Mandatory disinfection of vehicles transporting porcine products is required, and farmers are instructed to isolate suspect animals and report deaths immediately. While the virus poses a significant economic threat to breeders and meat supplies, it does not transmit to humans.
