Laos suspends new work permits and labor visas for Bangladeshi nationals
The Lao Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare has suspended the issuance of new work permits, labor import plans, and labor projects for Bangladeshi nationals. The suspension, which took effect on 1 September, is scheduled to remain in place until the end of 2026.
Authorities stated the measure aims to curb illegal entry, human smuggling, unauthorized labor brokers, and employers who evade responsibility for foreign workers. While the directive does not explicitly state why the focus is specifically on Bangladeshi nationals, reports indicate there have been allegations of abuse and involvement in criminal activities among Bangladeshi nationals in Laos.
Major government-approved priority projects with existing fixed contract schedules are exempt from this freeze. Violators, including employers and labor operators, face significant fines, mandatory deportation, and the potential revocation of business licenses. For example, employers importing unauthorized workers face a fine of approximately USD 110 per worker per violation.
According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training, roughly 3,000 Bangladeshi workers received clearance to travel to Laos during the first eight months of this year. The Bangladeshi government has stated it has received no official information regarding the directive and will examine the matter.
