Laos to build $203 million supercritical coal power plant

Laos is set to begin construction on a 330 MW coal-fired power plant in Xieng Khouang province to stabilize the national power grid during the dry season. The project, led by Rich Namphan Energy One Member Co., Ltd., involves an investment of approximately $202.95 million and is expected to be operational by 2029.

This facility marks a technological milestone for the country as the first coal-fired plant in Laos to utilize supercritical technology. This method operates at higher temperatures and pressures than traditional coal plants, increasing thermal efficiency and reducing emissions per unit of electricity produced.

The project features significant Chinese involvement. West China Electric Power Industry Co., Ltd. will provide equipment and installation supervision, while Dongdok Technical Construction and Installation One Member Co., Ltd. will serve as the main contractor.
