Lapa dos Mercadores Church to host solemn Assumption Mass in Rio

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Lapa dos Mercadores in Rio de Janeiro's historic center will host a solemn Mass to celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, August 15, at 12:15 PM, will feature Latin liturgy, a large orchestra, and the Astorga Choir under the direction of soprano Juliana Sucupira.

The event aims to recover the traditional atmosphere of 18th and 19th-century religious ceremonies through the use of incense, flowers, and historical sacred silverware from the former brotherhood of merchants. The Mass will be presided over by Father Vitor Pimentel Pereira.

In a theological context, the Solemnity of the Assumption is noted as a celebration of the resurrection of the body and a fundamental tenet of faith, signifying the hope that the body, like the soul, is holy and destined for transfiguration.
